Bird Assist for iPhone · Last updated October 19, 2026
Bird Assist identifies birds from photos and sounds. Everything happens on your iPhone. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
Photos and recordings
Photos you take or choose and sounds you record are analysed by models that run on your iPhone. They are never uploaded. Recent scans, including their photo or recording, are kept on your iPhone so you can look back at them, and you can clear them at any time.
Camera, photos and microphone
The camera is used only when you take a photo to identify. Bird Assist only sees the photos you choose. The microphone is used only while you record a bird to identify.
Location
If you allow it, Bird Assist uses your location to list birds seen near you and to favour birds that occur there at that time of year. It is used only on your iPhone and is never sent anywhere. When a photo you choose contains the place and date it was taken, that is read on your iPhone for the same purpose. You can turn location off in Bird Assist's settings or in your iPhone's settings.
Your life list
The birds you log, your streak and your scans are stored only on your iPhone. A backup file is only made if you choose to export one. Widgets show your streak and the bird of the day using data that stays on your iPhone.
Notifications
If you allow them, Bird Assist schedules a streak reminder on your iPhone. It is a local notification: nothing is sent to or from a server.
Purchases
Bird Assist Pro is bought through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment, and Bird Assist never receives your payment details or Apple ID. The app only checks with Apple whether Pro is active on your Apple ID.
Links
All photos and data are built into the app. Links you tap to iNaturalist, Wikimedia Commons or Creative Commons open those websites, which have their own privacy policies.
Data we collect
None. Bird Assist has no server that receives your data and uses no analytics or advertising services.
Children
Bird Assist collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
